Nina Nunes will be moving up a division looking to turn things around against a struggling Cynthia Calvillo.
Nunes (10-7 MMA, 4-4 UFC) and Calvillo (9-4-1 MMA, 6-4-1 UFC) have been booked to meet in a women’s flyweight bout July 9 at UFC Fight Night. A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie on Thursday following an initial report from ESPN.
Nunes, 36, has lost her last two fights to Tatiana Suarez and most recently Mackenzie Dern after she had been on a four-fight winning streak. Nearly two years passed between the losses to Suarez (June 2019) and Dern (April 2021) as Nunes got pregnant and gave birth to hers and wife Amanda Nunes’ first child. Nina Nunes’ loss to Dern was by first-round armbar submission.
Calvillo, 34, has been on a downswing since 2020, dropping three fights in a row. She lost a decision to Katlyn Chookagian at UFC 255 and followed up with back-to-back TKO defeats to former strawweight champion Jessica Andrade and most recently Andrea Lee last November.
