Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin III didn’t seem to thrill fans all that much.
According to data cited by Dan Rafael of Bout Freaks Unite, the pay-per-view purchases in the United States for the fight that took place on Saturday in Las Vegas ranged from 555,000 to 575,000. In fact, according to one of Rafael’s sources, the final tally could exceed 600,000.
Compared to the 1.3 million buys for their first fight, a controversial draw in 2017, and the 1.1 million for Alvarez’s majority-decision victory the following year, these statistics are much lower. In November of 2017, Alvarez-Caleb Plant reportedly did 800,000. In May of this year, Alvarez-Dmitry Bivol reportedly did 520,000.
The campaign may end up losing money depending on Saturday’s purchasing rate. Given the combined $75 million it guaranteed the combatants, DAZN needed to do well above 600,000 subscribers to break even, sources told Rafael.
