During the UFC 279 weigh-in, Khamzat Chimaev stepped off the scales, and the entire event has been thrown into disarray as a result.
For his main event bout against Nate Diaz at welterweight, the unbeaten Chimaev weighed in at an enormous 178.5 pounds (who weighed in at 171 lbs).
The massive discrepancy has cast considerable doubt on Chimaev’s ability to compete on Saturday.
Sources told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani that Chimaev’s failure to make weight was due to a medical issue.
“I’m told the reason why Chimaev missed weight by so much was due to a “medical issue.” Unclear what that is and how that affects him long term.”
According to reports, talks with the UFC are currently underway to determine whether or not Diaz would get to compete against a different opponent or if the fight will be rescheduled.
